CIPM Professional Experience Policy
You must be a regular member of the CIPM Association to be eligible for the award of the CIPM designation.
Requirements
To qualify for regular membership in the CIPM Association, you must have accrued either:

Two years of professional experience in one or more positions
substantially entailing performance-related activities, such as
- Calculating, analyzing, evaluating, or presenting investment results
- Providing consulting, technological, legal/regulatory, or accounting services directly in support of such activities
- Verifying compliance with the GIPS standards
- Supervising, directly or indirectly, persons who practice such activities
- Teaching such activities
or

Four years of professional experience in the investment industry
that consists, to a majority extent, of
- Evaluating or applying financial, economic, and/or statistical data as part of the investment decision-making process
- Marketing investment management services
- Monitoring an investment firm’s compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and standards
- Evaluating or recommending investment managers
- Supervising, directly or indirectly, persons who practice the activities set forth above
- Teaching such activities
Summer, part-time, and internship positions do not qualify. CFA charterholders, regular members of CFA Institute, and members of the Associates of the Society of Investment Professionals (ASIP) are exempt from the CIPM experience requirement.
Procedures for Submitting Experience
You may submit a description of your professional experience at any time. For each position, please provide the following information:
- Employer
- Main activity of business
- Job title
- Employment dates (month and year)
- Detailed description of job duties/responsibilities
Candidates will be prompted to enter their work experience during enrollment. You may also update your work experience online at any time.
Evaluation and Communication
We will evaluate the experience statement of each candidate who passes the Expert exam, determine whether the candidate qualifies for regular membership in the CIPM Association, and notify the candidate of the decision. Those who meet all requirements will automatically become regular members of the CIPM Association. Candidates who are denied credit for their experience may appeal the decision and/or submit additional information.
