Canadian Private Wealth Update

E-mail sent 13 February 2007

Dear Canadian CFA Institute Member:

The Canadian CFA society leadership has created a unique, first-ever national strategic plan that involves several initiatives over the next five years. The underlying goal of this plan is to accelerate brand awareness and opportunity for Canada's CFA society members and provide members with new tools to accentuate and communicate the skills and abilities emanating from the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK™).

As part of the planning process, leaders from your societies provided insight into key challenges and opportunities facing their respective membership. Leaders noted the increasing number of CFA Institute members with careers in private wealth management. Research shows that nearly 25% of all Canadian members manage private client assets, and the outlook for growth has never been brighter.

The society leaders believe that Canada's charterholders require a marketing and/or communication strategy, and they want a strategy that is unique to Canada but at the same time complements the successful "macro" advertising that CFA Institute has generated through radio, television, and print.

Marketing Plan

The Canadian society leadership developed a detailed plan for marketing within the country:

  1. Develop a "talking points" document to help CFA Institute members communicate the compelling value the CFA charter brings to prospective clients, media, employers, and the general public.
  2. Create and facilitate professional networks with key advisers in the private wealth community.
  3. Organize a national private wealth management speaker event and encourage CFA Institute members and their clients to attend. The event would also involve regional and/or national media coverage.
  4. Identify Canadian CFA society members who could act as media spokespeople for national and regional stories.

Initiatives in Action

It is with great pleasure that I introduce you to our first initiative, the Canadian Talking Points. This document provides CFA Institute members involved in private wealth management with the facts, figures, and essential components of the CFA Program CBOK (at a practical level), and it can be communicated to the public to differentiate you as a trusted manager/analyst of private client assets. We encourage you to apply these points in whatever manner you believe would add value to your career as a professional and look forward to your feedback.

The second initiative is coming to you through a variety of sources, the first of which is a Private Wealth Forum with a Canadian practitioner area.

Your local society is also working on a variety of programming that will allow you, the private wealth practitioner, the opportunity to network and further your specialty.

Lastly, please take a moment to fill out the Private Wealth Management survey. Your participation will help CFA Institute to better understand your private wealth interests and activities for future planning and product offerings.

Wishing you the very best,

Beth Hamilton Keen, CFA
