Speaker Profiles

 

Yiorgos Allayannia Yiorgos Allayannis is an associate professor of business administration at the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia. His research, which primarily focuses on corporate risk management, capital structure, and corporate financial policies, has appeared in leading journals, such as the Journal of Finance, the Review of Financial Studies, and the American Economic Review. Professor Allayannis has received the Wachovia Award for Research Excellence. He holds an MBA degree from the University of Massachusetts and a PhD degree in finance from the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University.

Mark J.P. Anson, CFA

Mark J.P. Anson, CFA, is president and executive director of investment services at Nuveen Investments. Previously, he was CEO of Hermes Pensions Management and chief investment officer of the California Public Employees’ Retirement System. Dr. Anson has published a number of textbooks and award-winning research articles on topics ranging from alpha and beta separation to corporate governance. He serves on several advisory boards including the CFA Institute Board of Governors and the editorial boards of several financial journals. Dr. Anson holds master’s and PhD degrees in finance from Columbia University and a JD degree from Northwestern University.

Ashvin B. Chhabra

Ashvin B. Chhabra is chief investment officer at the Institute for Advanced Study. Previously, he was managing director and head of wealth management strategies and analytics at Merrill Lynch, and head of quantitative research at J.P. Morgan Private Bank. Dr. Chhabra has had extensive experience in the areas of private banking, institutional management, and derivatives research. He is the author of a framework for wealth allocation for the individual investor that was published in the Journal of Wealth Management. Dr. Chhabra holds a PhD in physics from Yale University.

Harindra de Silva, CFA

Harindra de Silva, CFA, is president and portfolio manager of Analytic Investors, LLC. Previously, he was a principal at Analysis Group, Inc., where he developed quantitative equity strategies and econometric models for use in asset allocation strategies. Dr. de Silva has authored several articles and studies, and in 2002 and 2005, he and his colleagues were recipients of the Graham and Dodd Award of Excellence for their research published in the Financial Analysts Journal. He holds a BS degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, an MS degree in economic forecasting and an MBA degree in finance from the University of Rochester, and a PhD degree in finance from the University of California, Irvine.

Marc Faber

Marc Faber is managing director of Marc Faber Limited and editor of “The Gloom, Boom & Doom Report.” Previously, he served as managing director of Drexel Burnham Lambert (HK) Ltd. Dr. Faber is the bestselling author of the book Tomorrow’s Gold: Asia’s Age of Discovery and a regular contributor to several leading financial publications. Well known for his “contrarian” investment approach, he speaks frequently at investment seminars and is the subject of the book Riding the Millennial Storm by Nury Vittachi. Dr. Faber holds a PhD in economics from the University of Zurich.

Louis-Vincent Gave

Louis-Vincent Gave is CEO and co-founder of GaveKal and MW GaveKal. Previously, he worked for Paribas Capital Markets as an analyst in Paris and Hong Kong. Mr. Gave is currently based in Hong Kong, contributing to GaveKal’s research and offering his clients information and ideas relating to Asia. He is the author of the book A Roadmap for Troubling Times and co-author of The End Is Not Nigh and Our Brave New World. Mr. Gave holds a bachelor's degree from Duke University and studied Mandarin at Nanjing University.

Jeremy Grantham

Jeremy Grantham is chief strategist and co-founder of GMO. Previously, he was co-founder of Batterymarch Financial Management, where he recommended commercial indexing in 1971, one of several claims to being first. Mr. Grantham began his investment career as an economist with Royal Dutch Shell. He is an active member of GMO’s asset allocation division and has served on the investment boards of several non-profit organizations. Mr. Grantham has been featured in Forbes, Barron’s, and BusinessWeek and is routinely quoted by the financial press. He holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Sheffield and an MBA degree from Harvard Business School. 

Bruce Greenwald

Bruce Greenwald is Robert Heilbrunn Professor of Asset Management and Finance at Columbia Business School at Columbia University and director of research for the Global Value Group at Arnhold and S. Bleichroeder Advisers, LLC. Previously, he taught as a professor at Harvard Business School and Wesleyan University. Professor Greenwald is an authority on value investing with additional expertise in productivity and the economics of information. His published work includes a contribution to the sixth edition of Security Analysis and he is co-author of a number of books, including Globalization and Value Investing: From Graham to Buffett and Beyond. He holds BS and PhD degrees from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and MPA and MS degrees from Princeton University.

Bud Haslett, CFABud Haslett, CFA, is head of Risk Management, Derivatives, and Alternative Investments for CFA Institute. Previously, he served as director of option analytics for Miller Tabak + Co and CEO of Miller Tabak Capital Management. Mr. Haslett has previously served as a board member of the New York Society of Security Analysts (NYSSA), chair of the Board of Regents for the Financial Analysts Seminar, and president of the CFA Society of Philadelphia. He has also taught coursework on options at New York University, Johns Hopkins, and Rutgers. He is the founding chairman of the derivatives committee for NYSSA and is a member of the institutional investor advisory committee for the Chicago Board of Options Exchange. Mr. Haslett holds master’s degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University.

David A. Hendler, CFA

David A. Hendler is senior analyst and head of global financial services research at CreditSights, Inc., an independent securities research company. Previously, he was a director at Credit Suisse First Boston and a managing director and head of corporate bond research at Smith Barney. Mr. Hendler has been ranked by Institutional Investor for its All-America U.S. Bank Fixed-Income Research Team. He is a board member of the Capital Markets Credit Analysts Society. Mr. Hendler holds a BS degree in economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA in finance from the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University.

David M. Jones

David M. Jones is president and CEO of DMJ Advisors, LLC, and chairman of the board of Investors’ Security Trust Company. He is also an executive professor of economics at the Lutgert College of Business at Florida Gulf Coast University. Previously, he was chairman of the board of directors and chief economist at Aubrey G. Lanston & Company, a vice president and financial economist at Irving Trust Company, and an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Dr. Jones is the author of numerous articles and books, including Fed Watching and Interest Rate Projections: A Practical Guide and Unlocking the Secrets of the Fed: How Monetary Policy Affects the Economy and Your Wealth-Creation Potential. He is a member of the Economic Club of New York and the National Association of Business Economists. Dr. Jones holds a BA from Coe College and an MA and a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania.

Robert M. Luck, CFARobert M. Luck, CFA, is director, member and society liaison for the CFA Centre for Financial Market Integrity. He serves as the primary liaison between the CFA Centre and the member societies of CFA Institute, communicating CFA Centre positions to societies and gathering input from members and local society leaders. Mr. Luck has been responsible for curriculum development, exam development, and exam grading and served as CFO and treasurer for both the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts and the Financial Analyst Federation prior to their merger and the creation of AIMR, the predecessor to CFA Institute, in 1990. He holds BS and MS degrees from the University of Virginia.

Catherine A. Lynch, CFA Catherine A. Lynch, CFA, is CEO and chief investment officer of the National Railroad Retirement Investment Trust, which was created by the U.S. Congress to invest railroad retirement assets in a diversified portfolio. Previously, she was associate vice president for treasury management at George Washington University and assistant treasurer of the Episcopal Church of America in New York. Ms. Lynch is an equity analyst by training with experience on both the buy and sell side. She serves on the administrative committee of the Institute for Quantitative Research in Finance and is chair of its audit committee. Ms. Lynch holds a BA degree in philosophy from Yale University.

Christopher Malloy

Christopher Malloy is an assistant professor in the finance unit of Harvard Business School, where he teaches the first semester core finance course. His research focuses on asset pricing, investment and portfolio choice, labor economics, behavioral finance, and empirical corporate finance. Previously, he taught at London Business School and worked at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in Washington, DC. Professor Malloy’s research has appeared in the Journal of Finance and has been described in the Financial Times. He received a BA in economics from Yale University and an MBA and a PhD from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.

Sudi MariappaSudi Mariappa is senior advisor, portfolio management at PIMCO. Previously he was managing director and head of global portfolio management, with responsibility for overseeing their global portfolio management efforts. Prior to joining PIMCO, he served as managing director for Merrill Lynch in Tokyo. Mr. Mariappa's prior experience included positions at Sumitomo Finance International PLC, Long Term Capital Management, and Salomon Brothers, where he was director of fixed income arbitrage. He holds both a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering and an MBA from Cornell University.

Guilio Martini

Giulio Martini is chief investment officer for currency strategies and head of the currency team for AllianceBernstein, focusing on currency alpha and overlay strategies. Previously, he taught at the Institute for Employment Policy at Boston University. Mr. Martini has also held economist and portfolio management roles, responsible for currency quantitative strategies and value equities, previously concentrating on U.S. research. He earned a BA degree from the University of Colorado and an MA degree in political economy from Boston University.

Roxanne M. Martino

Roxanne M. Martino is president and CEO of Aurora Investment Management L.L.C. (formerly known as Harris Alternatives L.L.C.). Previously, she was general partner at an alternative investment firm and a senior manager at Coopers & Lybrand. Ms. Martino has served as a director of the Investment Analysts Society of Chicago. She has appeared on CNBC and CNNfn and is a contributing author of a chapter titled “The Due Diligence Process” in the book, Hedge Fund Strategies, 2nd Edition. Ms. Martino holds a bachelor of business administration degree from the University of Notre Dame and an MBA degree from the University of Chicago.

Charles T. Maxwell

Charles T. Maxwell is a senior energy analyst at Weeden & Co. Previously, he worked for Mobil Oil and served as an oil analyst for a well-known Wall Street firm. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Mr. Maxwell was ranked by Institutional Investor as the top oil analyst in his field. He is an active member of an Oxford-based organization consisting of OPEC and other industry executives who meet twice a year to discuss trends within the energy industries. Mr. Maxwell was educated at Princeton University and Oxford University.

Arun S. Muralidhar

Arun Muralidhar is chairman and founder of Mcube Investment Technologies LLC. Previously, he held positions at FX Concepts and JP Morgan Fleming Asset Management. Dr. Muralidhar is the author of the book Innovations in Pension Fund Management, co-author of Rethinking Pension Reform,and editor of European Pension Reform. He has also written a number of articles and taught at several institutions including the University of Tokyo and the Sloan School of Management at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Muralidhar currently serves on the advisory board of the Journal of Performance Measurement. He holds a BS degree from Wabash College and a PhD degree in managerial economics from the Sloan School of Management.

Don M. Raymond, CFA

Donald M. Raymond, CFA, is senior vice president of public market investments at the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) Investment Board, where he is responsible for leading the development and execution of the strategy in publicly traded markets — which include stocks, bonds, currencies, and derivatives — whether implemented by internal investment professionals or by partnering with external managers. Previously, he held positions at Goldman Sachs and Burns Fry, a predecessor of BMO Capital Markets. Prior to developing an interest in finance, Dr. Raymond worked for Schlumberger in the People’s Republic of China and trained as a pilot in the Canadian Armed Forces. He holds a PhD degree in engineering from Queen's University.

Fran Skinner, CFA

Fran Skinner, CFA, is a principal at Focus Consulting Group. Previously, she held positions at Mellon Bank and Allstate Investments. Ms. Skinner has worked extensively with senior management on strategic planning, cash management, competitive compensation, succession planning, and designing and monitoring investment performance goals. She is co-author of the book High Performing Investment Teams: How to Achieve Best Practices of Top Firms and was interviewed by Financial Times for their spotlight on measuring firm culture. Ms. Skinner holds a BA degree from St. Xavier University and an MBA degree in finance and marketing from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Willis Sparks

Willis Sparks is an analyst in the global macro practice at Eurasia Group. Previously, he covered issues related to terrorism and national security at the Council on Foreign Relations. Mr. Sparks holds two bachelor of arts degrees from Brown University and a master of international affairs degree, specializing in international security policy and the study of the former Soviet Union, from Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs. He also holds a master’s degree in international relations from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques (Sciences Po).

Amit B. Wadhwaney Amit B. Wadhwaney is a senior member of the Third Avenue Management investment team and a portfolio manager for Third Avenue Management’s private and institutional advisory business. Additionally, he is portfolio manager of Third Avenue Global Value Fund. Previously, Mr. Wadhwaney was portfolio manager of the Carl Marks Global Value Fund and a principal of Glenrock Asset Management Associates. His securities analyst career includes time spent focusing on paper and forest products as well as the newsprint, pulp, and fine paper industries. Mr. Wadhwaney holds BS degrees in chemical engineering and mathematics from the University of Minnesota, BA and MA degrees in economics from Concordia University, and an MBA in finance from the University of Chicago.  

Earl E. WebbEarl E. Webb is CEO of Jones Lang LaSalle’s capital markets group in the Americas, where he oversees transactions in investment sales, corporate finance, debt and structured finance, and real estate investment banking. Previously, he served as second vice president in the capital markets group at Continental Illinois National Bank. Mr. Webb serves as a member of the Jones Lang LaSalle Global Capital Markets Board and is a member of the Americas’ Management Executive Committee. He holds a BS in accounting and finance from the University of Virginia and an MBA from the J. L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.

Arshad R. Zakaria

Arshad R. Zakaria is chief executive and founder of New Vernon Capital LLC. Previously, he was an executive vice president at Merrill Lynch & Co. and president of their global markets and investment banking group. Mr. Zakaria also served as a member of Merrill Lynch’s executive management and operating committees and as head of corporate risk management. He currently serves on the boards of the Cancer Institute of New Jersey and the Indian School of Business. Mr. Zakaria holds a BA degree in applied mathematics from Harvard University and an MBA degree from Harvard Business School.

Jamie ZieglerJamie Ziegler is a principal at Focus Consulting Group, where she specializes in helping investment leaders and teams achieve high levels of sustainable success, with an emphasis on superior communications and world-class decision making. Previously, she served as senior vice president of global marketing for Northern Trust Global Investments and as director of marketing/product management at Stein Roe & Farnham, Inc. Ms. Ziegler began her career as a mutual fund analyst and has co-authored books and other publications on mutual fund investing, including the book High Performing Investment Teams. She holds a BA in English from the University of Notre Dame and an MBA in finance from DePaul University.
