Certificate in ESG Investing name change FAQs

On 8 April 2025, the CFA Institute Certificate in ESG Investing will be renamed the Sustainable Investing Certificate.

Since the certificate first launched, the concept of ESG investing has evolved and has, at times, had varied meanings in different markets. The term “sustainable investing” now more accurately captures the broader, long-term impact and investing goals that the certificate aims to support.

The name of the certificate will officially change on 8 April 2025.

While we are changing the name of the certificate, the curriculum will remain the same, covering the wide variety of factors within each of the environmental, social, and governance areas of ESG investing.

No.  Everything else will remain the same, including the price, certificate availability, testing requirements, learning experience, PL credits, exam, and all policies and procedures.

Candidates who enrolled in the 2024 Certificate in ESG Investing through 31 December 2024 will not see a change in their current candidate experience.  When they log into the Learning Ecosystem, they will still see the certificate called the “Certificate in ESG Investing.” They will have six months from the day they registered to study the curriculum and complete their exam.  When they schedule and sit for the exam, it will still be called the “Certificate in ESG Investing.”

Candidates who enrolled in the 2025 Certificate in ESG Investing beginning 1 January 2025 will continue studying as normal, but starting on 8 April the name of the certificate in the Learning Ecosystem and the exam they take will be labeled the “Sustainable Investing Certificate.”

If your exam shows either name, rest assured that everything is fine. You will be tested on the curriculum you have been studying.

Starting on 8 April 2025 when any candidate passes the exam and earns their digital badge and certificate, it will use the new “Sustainable Investing Certificate” name.  If candidates pass the exam before 8 April 2025, it will use the “Certificate in ESG Investing” name but update to the new name on 8 April.

As a part of this change, CFA Institute will update the name on the digital certificate and badge earned when anyone passed the Certificate in ESG Investing exam.  Starting on 8 April 2025, the badge and certificate will use the new “Sustainable Investing Certificate” name.

Nothing about the accomplishment will change, and the link where certificate holders are able to access their certificate and badge will remain the same and update to the new name automatically.  However, if people who have passed the certificate wish their LinkedIn profile to use the new name, they will need to update the digital badge in the “Licenses and Certifications” section of their profile.
