Career conversations: Plugging the knowledge gap

Fan, CFA, was looking to deepen her financial knowledge when she embarked on the CFA® Program. And she has plenty of advice for those looking to follow in her footsteps. Watch Fan’s career story.

After graduation, I joined the Big Four and that's where I started my career in the finance sector. From there, I was looking for more challenge and CFA® (Program) was the right program that can fit my knowledge gap. Hi, my name is Fan Fan. I currently work as a project finance associate with ING Bank. CFA Program has the right curriculum to prepare those who want to enter into the finance sector.

It covers a wide range of topics from private equity to risk or wealth management and also it's rather flexible. I could study at my own pace while working full time. It could be challenging at times. With my accounting knowledge learned from school and work, it's still not easy because I have to make sure I get the details right.

It was rather challenging to squeeze time to study after work. Some sacrifice has to be made. The platform provides a bundle of resources, including training materials and webinars, which help us to upskill, even when we are away from work or studying at our own pace. The society organizes offline events for networking sessions where I can meet seniors and mentors for valuable advice.

For those who are considering taking this program, I would advise them to do the homework first to make sure this is the right certificate to take because the journey is going to require a lot of time and effort to be invested. And once you have made up your mind, I would advise that you give your 100% for it.

And don't be afraid to ask for help and advice whenever you are in need. Many of the CFA (Institute) members out there are willing to help you. While the journey could be challenging at times, it's definitely worth it. I enjoy the sense of achievement at the end of the journey, and it leads me to where I am in my career now.
