Janet Mui, CFA, says she would tell her younger self to invest early, be open to opportunities, and embrace feedback as a chance to improve, without letting a perfectionist streak lead to self-doubt. Now the China-focused Head of Market Analysis at a UK wealth manager, Janet enjoys the dynamic nature of a career in finance and she celebrates the growing diversity in finance.
I was asked to do an interview live on BBC Business News. I was just so amazed I got this opportunity to start with, because I thought it would be another ten years before I would be invited as a TV guest.
I'm a person who always likes to learn new things and to solve problems and to find solutions. I think finance is absolutely perfect for me because no day is the same.
My expertise is on China. Clients are constantly asking for advice or views. Being an expert improves your value in the workplace. The financial services industry, it has been, and still is, a very male-dominated industry. But I think over the years I see more and more faces from different nationalities and cultures. And I think it's really thanks to a lot of company’s initiatives and also programs from the media. For example, I participated in the Bloomberg New Voices program which really encourages and supports female voices from different diverse backgrounds.
The most important advice I would give to my younger self is to invest as early as you can. When you get your paycheck, put a chunk of money into your investment account. There are really many resources nowadays that is available on the internet or on various channels, and just read them and think about what investment style may suit you the most. Be open to opportunities to show that you're valuable, because if you think about it, career is about growth.
A lot of self-doubt is rooted in the idea of perfectionism. People's feedback could really be meant for you to improve, so don't take it too negatively. As long as you feed yourself with positive ideas and thinking, I think you will actually turn out to be better.
